HONG KONG AND SHANGHAI BANKING CORPORATION.

HONGKONG 25th July, 1935.

The Honourable

The Colonial Secretary,

Hong Kong

Sir,

You will recollect that in March last this Corpora- tion was earnestly approached by various Officials in this Colony with a view to the Corporation being interested in the acquisition of the rights for the exclusive Water supply of the Colony of Macau for certain reasons which were pressed upon

the writer.

Such representations included that immediate request would be made to the Home Government to safeguard this Corporation in the event of certain political influences altering or prejudicing the future prospects of the project.

Acting on such representations, and having regard to the necessity for expediting negotiations with the Macau Government, for reasons which are well known to you, this Corporation agreed, without waiting for confirmation from the Government, to negotiate for and to finance the proposal, and as a result of such negotiations a Concessionary Contract has now been given to a Portuguese Company operated and owned by the Macau Waterworks Co.,Ltd., for the term of sixty years with an option of renewal. The Macau Waterworks Company is in turn owned by this Corporation and the Macau Electric Lighting Co.Ltd. in the proportions of 4/5ths and 1/5th.

Under the terms of this contract the Company has

to provide a suitable water supply to the Colony of Macau,
